Music

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations

At Sarisbury Infants, music is a key element of our curriculum and is integral to all areas of learning. Our children take part in a range of activities involving music:

  • Singing assemblies – these happen every week which involve the whole school. We also re-visit the songs we are learning throughout the week.
  • Strawberry Fayre – this is our annual summer fair which always has a theme where the children learn songs and dance.
  • Choir is run by a couple of our teachers and the children perform throughout the year at different events.
  • Our Year 2 children can attend Recorder club if they wish and they perform during assemblies and at our summer fayre.
  • Each year group performs a Christmas play where the children learn songs and dances. We invite the children at the junior school along to watch too.
  • The children help to create year group and class assemblies to celebrate their learning each term where they sing songs they have been learning to share with their parents.
  • We have planned music focused weeks where the children are involved in a variety of activities and visitors are invited into school to inspire the children.
  • We have a variety of music playing as the children come into assembly by different composers which also link to the time of year and any themes we are learning about.

Below is an overview to show our music learning throughout the year in the individual year groups.
