Design and Technology

Design and Technology helps develop young children’s skill and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms and a range of materials, including food. D&T encourages children’s creativity and encourages them to think about important issues. It nurtures creativity and innovation through design and encourages children to reflect and make changes to improve their work. It supports children to explore the designed and made world that we live in and teaches them the practical skills and techniques to make their design come to life.

D&T is split into two parts- Design supports children to understand contexts, uses and purposes and enables the children to explore a variety of designs to support their own. It also encourages the children to generate, develop and communicate their ideas to support their final design. The second part is the making side which encourages the children to plan and think about the resources they will need to make their plan come to life.

D&T is very practical and encourages the children to demonstrate the different skills and techniques that have been taught in the classroom when making their final project. It encourages children to think about the finishing on their design and works cross-curricula with Art and ICT.
